The Study Abroad Experience: Traveling in Rome
I created this new page on my blog to show the things I have learned here in Italy that is not happening in the kitchen. Yes, I named it "The Study Abroad Experience," but it is also a bit of a travel guide for places anyone may travel to in Italy. If you have any questions about places I have been to, comment below and let me know what you would like me to share. For now, I want to share with you all my experiences in Rome and the best way to do it all!
- A fabulous Airbnb to stay at : "Welcome to Roma" located near Vatican City; This is owned by a husband and wife who are amazing hosts. They give you a list of places to go and see, also places to eat. They are super friendly, helpful, and even have a great website to help you with your travels.
- BUY the Roma Pass! I can not tell you how much money this saved me. I got this pass where you get free entrance into one place they list (we chose the Colosseum), discounts up to 70% off at other museums, and FREE transportation via the bus or subway. You can buy the pass for 48 hours or 72 hours, but we saved close to 100 euro each with this card. You can get it activated right at the Fuimicino airport with your passport. Here is where I bought it from:
www.tiquets.com
- Places to eat:
Trattoria Moderna, located near the Pantheon
This restaurant is a great place to dine with local dishes from Rome. It is a little off the beaten path, but that just means it is not touristy. We dined here for lunch, 3 people, with wine, four about 55 euros.
Osteria delle Cammari, located near Vatican City
This is a very good restaurant, owned and operated by a very nice family. They have a great wine selection and have very large portions. We dined here with 3 people and each got an appetizer, entree, and dessert with wine for about 90 euros.
Other recommendations from friends:
- Barnum cafe': excellent coffee bar during the day with latte art; at night, it becomes a popular cocktail bar as well
- Dar poeta: A pizza place that is delicious, but you must get the ricotta nutella pizza dessert
- The subway is amazing, clean, and very safe in Rome. There are military personnel at each stop and also at all of the tourist sites. There are just two lines on the subway, the blue and the orange. If you stay at "Welcome to Roma," the subway is just a 5 minute walk. At each train stop, it tells you different sites to see, like the Trevi Fountain, Vatican, Colosseum, etc.
- What to see:
1. Colosseum
2. Trevi Fountain (stop on subway)
3. Spanish Steps (same stop as Pantheon)
4. Pantheon
5. Vatican City & St. Peter's Basilica
6. Sistine Chapel
7. The Building of Our Father Land
8. Palatine Hill (across from the Colosseum)
